Regional legal executives examine cross-border regulatory challenges, artificial intelligence, dispute resolution, and the evolving role of general counsel in a rapidly changing global economy.
On October 14–15, 2026, Dudley Newman Feuerzeig LLP was among the peer law firms to sponsor Lex Mundi’s 2026 Caribbean General Counsel Forum, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on October 14–15, 2026. Partner Claire Anaclerio and Associate Lennox Mark attended on behalf of the firm.
Organized by Lex Mundi and hosted by its Puerto Rico member firm, McConnell Valdés LLC, the Forum brought together legal professionals representing a diverse range of industries, including banking, insurance, healthcare, telecommunications, technology, energy, transportation, and manufacturing. Senior corporate legal executives and legal practitioners from across the Caribbean and Central America held panel discussions on the increasingly complex legal, regulatory, and commercial challenges facing businesses operating throughout the Caribbean.
Addressing the Caribbean’s Evolving Legal Landscape
The Forum’s agenda reflected the growing complexity of conducting business across Caribbean jurisdictions, where differences in legal systems, regulatory frameworks, and economic conditions create distinct challenges for corporate counsel.
Discussions were organized around several critical areas of legal practice, including cross-border risk and regulatory complexity, managing disputes across multiple jurisdictions, industry-specific legal priorities, artificial intelligence governance, and the changing responsibilities of general counsel. The Forum also explored how corporate legal departments can move beyond traditional advisory and compliance functions to become more strategic partners in organizational decision-making, risk management, and long-term business planning.
Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Regulatory Risks
Artificial Intelligence, and its implications for the legal profession, featured prominently among the Forum’s discussion topics. As businesses increasingly integrate AI-enabled technologies into their operations, law firms and in-house general counsel face emerging questions involving data protection, cybersecurity, and accountability.
In addition to this, law firms are uniquely challenged to integrate AI-tools into their practice in a sophisticated and ethical manner that preserves attorney-client confidentiality. Some attendees noted that AI-tools facilitated certain efficiencies that could translate into cost-saving for clients, while others highlighted that AI-tools in the hands of non-lawyers threatens the profession at large. Despite varying approaches to AI adoption, attendees agreed that integrating AI into their professional services and customer products was crucial to remaining regionally and globally competitive.
Strengthening Regional Collaboration
A core aspect of the Forum was the ability of peer firms to invite their clients to attend. Dudley Newman Feuerzeig sponsored its client, LG Electronics Panama, S.A, to participate in the discussion. Nicole Lavalas, LG’s Regional Manager, Legal, for Central American and the Caribbean, participated in the panel titled Cross-Border Risk & Regulatory Complexity in the Caribbean. Lavalas’s contributions urged outside counsel to adapt a strategic, solutions-oriented mindset to their legal advice and brought an important, multinational perspective to the panel. As Caribbean economies continue to evolve and attract international investment, collaboration among legal professionals remains essential to addressing cross-border commercial challenges and supporting sustainable business growth.
